Searching for scientific papers is one of the most important skills that a researcher needs to conduct a research study. Doing so has never been easier. Nowadays, we are envied by previous generations because we have easy access to information, courtesy of the Internet. Indeed, we are a click away from information that in the past few decades could only be had by visiting a library. In spite of these changes, some beginner researchers still find it difficult to get the information they need. What’s worse is that others could not tell which sources are reliable and which are not.
When looking for a new scientific research topic, the researcher can initially seek the help of Google, or sometimes Wikipedia. Both can provide the beginner researcher with leads. After searching these portals, the researcher ought to switch to more reliable scientific search engines to gather in-depth information. Examples include PubMed and Ovid. Sources of information obtained from these engines are to be listed at the end of the paper (in the references section). The reference list is an important part of the report that determines the strength or weakness of the researcher’s study.
What determines the strength of scientific references is its reliance on research papers published in indexed scientific journals. In a coming article, I shall hopefully talk about how to determine the strength of scientific journals.
What are indexed scientific research papers?
Search Scientific Articles
Indexed scientific research papers, that is peer-reviewed papers, have gone through rigorous screening by specialists. Hence the methods used in these studies are deemed scientific, and the results and findings, reliable and free from political and religious biases or chauvinism. However they might still be open to criticism and debate.
The most common scientific research papers
This article identifies two types of indexed scientific research papers. I will start with the type that is suitable for beginner researchers or those researching new topics. It’s worth noting that there are other types of indexed research papers, but I will restrict myself to these two because they are the most common ones. The first type is the literature review article in which you can find a review of new research articles together with a scientific analysis of them. There are prestigious scientific journals specialized in publishing this type of research papers. Among these are Nature Review and Current Opinion.
The second type of scientific research is the scientific article. Most suitable for those specialized in a specific area, it provides scientific results that supplement, confirm, or refute previous findings. Scientific articles follow a specific structure. They have such sections as abstract, an introduction, methodology, results, and a discussion of the results in light of what had already been found about the research topic. This type of article ends with a conclusion summarizing the results of the study.
How can you get research articles?
Scientific Publications Search
There are different types of search engines. Some are open access. Others require you to subscribe. But most universities and research centers provide their students and teaching staff with institutional subscriptions. The most famous ones are the following:
Search Science Articles
• PubMed
• Ovid
• ScienceDirect
• Scopus
• Web of Science
To get the maximum number of articles relating to the topic, the researcher has to identify its keywords and synonyms, especially scientific ones. For instance, when researching a medical topic, he needs to use the synonyms of medical terms. After identifying the key terms, he has to refine the search using the conjunctions “and,” “or,” or “not” to link the keywords. “And” is used to search for papers that mention the two words entered into the search bar, “or” for papers mentioning any of two words, and “not” for papers mentioning the key terms before the conjunction.

In a nutshell, it’s true that Google is a helpful friend to everyone. However, the researcher should not rely on it to build his scientific library and his research references. To become a good researcher, one needs to learn research skills, which means going through scientific research engines to keep up to date with the developments or novelties in a research area. This might seem daunting at first, but with practice and determination, the beginner researcher will hopefully make his way to success.
